After a great past few races of IndyCar, the Madison round was no different. This race of the season faced some challenges, however.
From crashes to changes in the overall standings – the Madison round is definitely one to remember.
In this article, we will go over some of the key moments from the race and also the rankings.
A Win For Kirkwood
It was a tough race on the oval circuit for Kirkwood, but it marks his 3rd win of the season. He commented saying that ovals have “eluded” him previously, so it is nice to break the ice with a win whilst meeting his ideal situation of getting an oval win (as well as a road course win).
This victory made him climb the overall ranks too. The addition of 51 points pushed his tally up to 209 points in total. He now sits at 3rd place and 4 points ahead of 4th place, Christian Lundgaard.
Many fans are predicting that Kirkwood will climb the ranks even more in the coming 9 races.
A Massive Crash For Foster and Newgarden
Midway through the race, a huge crash happened between 2-time champion Newgarden and Louis Foster.
Foster lost control of his car when accelerating and took a spin into the wall. Because of the impact, he bounced back and shot into the track of Newgarden. They were both unable to stop the collision from happening and therefore a crash at 180 mph happened.
This sent Newgarden flying into the air. He then flipped over, causing him to slide down the track upside down.
They were medically assessed but then let go, as fortunately, both drivers faced no injuries. Foster commented saying that he couldn’t slow the car and that it was a scary experience for both but ultimately, he is glad Newgarden is okay.
Rankings
1- Alex Palou, 311 points
2- Pato O’Ward, 221 points
3- Kyle Kirkwood, 209 points
4- Christian Lundgaard, 205 points
5- Felix Rosenqvist, 175 points
5- Will Power, 175 points
7- Scott Dixon, 173 points
8- Scott McLaughlin, 164 points
9- Colton Herta, 157 points
10- Santino Ferrucci, 144 points.
Overall, the changes to the standings combined with the massive crash mid race made for a wild one. It is certainly worth watching future races to see what changes even more.
