The FIA has officially granted 17-year-old F2 rookie Arvid Lindblad his Superlicense. They gave him the exemption upon Red Bull’s request, so that he could take part in F1 sessions before he was 18.
Lindblad currently holds enough points to qualify for the exemption clause (Article 13.1.2. Appendix L).
Prior to last year, this was off limits after Verstappen’s entry to F1. However, Mercedes re-opened the pathway for under 18s with Kimi Antonelli. They also requested a Superlicense exemption, similar to Red
Bull.
What is a Superlicense?
A Superlicense is a specific license that drivers need to compete, in this case, in Formula 1. There are conditions to being given a Superlicense, and applicants need to meet them.
To be eligible for one they must have: a valid driver’s license with driving experience, at least 40 points, be 18 (usually) and FIA training regarding behaviour must be complete.
The license ensures that racers are ready for F1 and acts as a filter – only capable drivers can move on.
If you don’t receive one, then you can’t progress.
Speculation
Although he turns 18 in two months’ time, Red Bull wanted a jump ahead. Many are speculating that their request is in line with the possibility of a Verstappen race ban.
Verstappen is sitting on 11 penalty points after his collision with George Russell cost him 3 additional ones. This means that he is just one point away from a race ban.
If this happens, then fans online believe that Isack Hadjar will go to Red Bull Racing and Lindblad will go to their sister team, VCARB.
However, reports have stated that the request has superseded Verstappen’s additional penalty points. The possibility of Lindblad being in F1 sooner is still in the air.
Overall, his future role in F1 and his involvement with Red Bull Racing is yet to be confirmed. However, he clearly is an asset to the company and shows great merit for a future Formula 1 career. It is only with time that we will see what happens with Arvid Lindblad.
