In F1 history, there have been some amazing moments. The Spa Circuit is a favourite amongst fans as well as drivers – holding some of the greatest memories both on and off track!
From massive crashes to iconic race victories, there is so much history to the track.
Schumacher Gets Mad in the Garages
Schumacher was in the lead of the race until he and David Coulthard had a collision on track. This seriously infuriated Schumacher, so he took it into his own hands after everyone was off track.
He stormed into the McLaren garage and confronted the driver in front of his entire team. He accused him of purposely crashing into him so that he could help his teammate, Mika Hakkinen. Coulthard denied this and later said he should have moved off the racing line.
Schumacher had to be physically held back; he was so angry.
13 Car Collision
During the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, chaos ensued. It was pouring rain on the track and Coulthard lost control during lap 1. He went straight into the wall then bounced back onto the racing line. Many drivers didn’t see this happen and everything was crazy.
Debris flew everywhere yet no one was seriously hurt.
Because of this issue, 11 cars had to retire. A commentator said that it was the worst start to a Grand Prix he ever saw.
Leclerc’s First Win
During the 2019 Belgian race week, an F2 driver was unfortunately killed during a high speed crash. An emotional tribute took place for him after the Sunday race.
However, a friend of Antoine Hubert, Charles Leclerc pushed his car to the maximum to secure his first win of his F1 career.
His first win was one of the most emotional in F1 history.
Räikkönen’s Win in 2009
During his final year at Ferrari, Kimi Räikkönen pushed for a final win at one of his favourite and best performing tracks.
He fought with Force India driver, Giancarlo Fisichella, for the P1 position and successfully overtook him on a corner. This is a highly difficult move to pull off, yet he did. Räikkönen also passed Hamilton during the mid-section of the Grand Prix.
