Super Formula and Formula 1 are both amazing; from the intense speed to rivalries and also the great tracks – but how do they actually differ?
Both have Formula in the name, but this doesn’t mean that they are the same at all.
Super Formula
Super Formula is a Japanese Championship that is at the very top of the game. It is the very pinnacle of motorsports in Asia. It’s technology is so up to date and beyond impressive when you research into it.
In the 2025 season, there are 7 races in total. As of right now, 5 of these have been done. These include races at Suzuka, Motegi, Autopolis, Fuji and Sugo. The next 2 rounds will be Suzuka and Fuji for the 2nd time. The most recent race was on the 10th of August however; the Super Formula 2025 Championship only continues in October – nearly 2 months later.
Formula 1
F1 is perhaps one of, if not the, most well-known motorsports of all time. It reaches a global scale and its home to some of the biggest car names as well as manufacturers ever – from McLaren to Aston Martin and also Mercedes.
In the 2025 Championship, the drivers are halfway through the races. There are 24 races overall spanning from the UK Silverstone track to Miami and even Australia. It is a very historically rich sport, with safety
and tech innovations reaching back 50+ years.
The Differences
Between the 2 there are surprisingly scarce differences apart from a few select things.
The obvious one is the location. Whilst F1 is a global tour essentially, Japan keeps internal and shows the amazing motorsport history as well as tracks in the country. F1 leaps from continent to continent for minimal time to race.
Along with this, the recognition/publicity that both of them receive are drastically different. F1 dominates the headlines within motorsport. You will find more videos, articles and posts about F1 due to the fact that it is simply so well-known and established from a marketing point of view.
However, Super Formula is a smaller Championship with less visibility. Therefore, you won’t be finding the same quantity of information, articles etc for SF as you do F1.
The Similarities
Although there are clearly differences between the 2 motorsports, they also have their similarities.
To start, the cars are quite alike in the technology. Although F1 is bound to be ahead (bigger budgets) Super Formula’s cars are really strong. In each division, they are designed slightly different but ultimately have the same goals and outcome.
Both feature an array of talented and experienced drivers. Yes, there are differences between the drivers, but anyone can see how physically challenging both sports are, and also how good these drivers are at their jobs.
Overall, they are both unique in their own individual ways yet share some similarities in their foundations. But what do you think? Have you ever watched Super Formula?
