F1 is great and all, but if you only stick to that, then you miss out on some of the craziest, most chaotic racing moments.
From last-lap madness, great overtakes and even pit lane fights, here are 5 underrated moments that prove motorsport is completely insane.
The “Hail Melon”
This is such an iconic moment from the 2022 NASCAR championship. Driver Ross Chastain pulled off a move so crazy and unthinkable.
With a playoff spot on the line as well as no hope of passing the people ahead, he floored it. After this, he wall-rode the car over the final corner. It was like something straight out of a video game.
This pushed him all the way up to 5th place, however, NASCAR banned the move the very next season. When asked about it he said, “I played a lot of NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube.”
The Final Lap Fight of 15 Riders
In the 2021 Mugello Moto3 race, pure chaos ensued. Moto3 races are typically tightly packed, but this was on a whole other level.
15 riders were within 1 second of each other during the final lap. This is a huge number of people all fighting to reach the number 1 spot. There were 4 wide overtakes, and slipstream battles as well as multiple lead changes in a single corner. Overall, Pedro Acosta won – but only just.
4 Cars Side-by-Side
In the 2020 Portuguese race in the WTCR, there was an amazing yet confusing incident. Touring cars ensure chaos, but this race was straight out of Mario Kart.
In one of the tightest city circuits in Europe, four drivers attempted to take on a corner at once, yet no one was overtaken. They all drove side by side – yes, all four of them! This resulted in a massive pileup, yet
somehow they all kept going.
Monaco Pileup
Monaco is one of the most popular, yet disliked tracks in the circuit line up. During the F3 2023 race, its notoriously tight turns and thin streets didn’t help when Pepe Marti missed his braking point.
This issue blocked the whole track for 15 cars. It took minutes to resolve and caused so much annoyance for both drivers and viewers.
Pit Lane Punches
After a mishap in the 2019 24 hours of Nürnberg, two mechanics from rival teams started arguing. This turned into a literal brawl – helmets thrown, pushing and shoving…
When officials found out about this – after they both were made to stop – they gave both teams a fine. They also reminded them that racing does not mean wrestling!
Overall, there are so many interesting and funny moments from motorsport – not just F1! Those who limit themselves to Formula 1 are certainly missing out on so many wild and entertaining mishaps.
