What Happened In The Canadian GP?

The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix was one to remember! After the Spanish Grand Prix, many fans were waiting eagerly for the next round of the 2025 season. Many climbed the ranks in the prior race so we all
wanted to see if this could be done again!

In this article, we will go over some of the key events from the race as well as the rankings.

Russell’s First Win Of The Season

George Russell had a great weekend during the Canadian round. From qualifying to the actual race, he performed amazingly well.

In Qualifying, he gained his first pole position after overtaking Verstappen. From here, many fans predicted that he would also perform well in the official race.

These predictions turned out to be correct as Russell outperformed many drivers. Many in the F1 world continue to feel shock when it comes to Russell’s skill as well as speed- he gained P1 yet again.

Antonelli’s First Podium

It was a good round for Mercedes this week!

Kimi Antonelli, as well as George Russell, gained a high position and points. He secured a P3 finish during the eventful race, making this his 1st ever podium in Formula 1.

The McLarens Clash

In the middle of Norris and Piastri’s head-to-head race, a mistake was made that cost Norris a podium finish. During Lap 67, the two were fighting for a higher ranking on the leader board. Norris attempted to
overtake through a gap that, in reality, didn’t exist. This caused them to collide and therefore forced Norris to retire.

Unlike an unscathed Piastri, Norris had damage to his vehicle.

However, immediately after the issue Lando Norris admitted fault and apologised. Both drivers were summoned to speak to the FIA stewards about the incident and Norris was subsequently given a 5 second penalty.

He did not finish the race, and Piastri placed 4th.

Race Aftermath

Towards the end of the race a safety car was deployed. During this time, George Russell suddenly braked. Many are saying that this was so that he could claim that Verstappen overtook him during a SC, which is not allowed and would have gained him at least 1 penalty point. This ultimately would have gotten the Red Bull driver a 1 time race ban as he is sat at 11 penalty points out of a maximum 12. However, others say he was just slowing down.

Due to this incident, Red Bull put in an appeal on the grounds of unsportsman-like conduct. The penalty appeal didn’t take any effect and Russell keeps his P1 finish.

There was some tension between the team leaders of Mercedes and RBR during the F1 movie premier in New York. Toto Wolff says that the claim was “so small and so petty” and that it is just “embarrassing” for the team. However when asked, Horner said he doesn’t have any regrets. He is sticking by the idea that “it a team’s right to do so (protest)”.

Rankings

3- Kimi Antonelli
